About Us

The New York Chamber Virtuosi is a newly formed orchestra combining energetic players with a fresh approach to breaking down musical boundaries. While keeping true to the classic orchestra, The NYCV looks to infuse our programs with exciting elements from other genres, including the pop, jazz, Broadway, and classical scenes. The NYCV intends to combine orchestral classics with these more mainstream musical genres.

Founded by composer/clarinetist Jessica Sibelman, The NYCV held their debut performance at The Kaufman   Center's Merkin Concert Hall, where they combined music of the classical repertoire with original works by Ms. Sibelman.  New York critic Mark Greenfest praised the performance of Mozart’s Symphony No. 29 as “invigorating” and noted that Sibelman “brought new life to traditional forms… (and) was most impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication of this young orchestra and their vibrant style of play!” . The concert also featured Tim Fain,  hailed by the NY Times as “a performer with a burgeoning career... played distinctively; establishing versatility, lyricism, virtuosity” in Sibelman’s  Violin Concerto.

This season, The NYCV is working to establish an eclectic concert series that brings together various genres of music. The 2009/2010 season features collaborations with Ovitt Music, SymphoNYC, and The 60x60 New Music Project.

In addition to the orchestral series, The NYCV has formed a Chamber Music and Outreach Series featuring lectures and performances by up-and-coming ensembles and our own ensemble-in-residence, The NYCV Players. The NYCV breaks down the barrier between the audience and musicians by means of a more intimate chamber performance in casual settings.  Through this series, the orchestra members build relationships with each other, as well as with their audience through non-musical and musical interactions. Past chamber performances include "Dance Fever!" "The Misunderstood Middle Years", and "French Connection."

Members of The NYCV are graduates of Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music, Mannes College of Music, and the New England Conservatory of Music, and have been acclaimed on their accomplishments in their solo, orchestral, and chamber music careers.
